Remembering Through Food

Every year on November 1 and 2, Filipino families gather to honor loved ones who have passed on. It’s a beautiful blend of prayer, remembrance, and — as always — food. Because in every Filipino celebration, even the solemn ones, food plays a comforting role.

In our family, Araw ng Patay is never gloomy. It’s quiet, yes — but full of warmth. We clean the graves, light candles, say prayers, and then gather around for merienda: pancit, puto, kakanin, and coffee in thermos cups.

These are simple foods, but somehow, they fill the heart as much as the stomach.

Pancit for Long Life

A must on any Filipino table, even on All Souls’ Day. Pancit reminds us that life, though fleeting, is worth celebrating. My lola always said, “Habang may pancit, may pag-asa.”

Kakanin: Sweet Memories

From suman sa lihiya to bibingka, kakanin has always been a symbol of togetherness. It’s sticky — because it’s meant to keep the family close. 💛

Coffee & Empanada at the Cemetery

You’ll always spot families at the cemetery sharing coffee and merienda under the tent. It’s such a tender image of love — quiet conversations, laughter between prayers, and kids chasing each other near candlelight.

Araw ng Patay reminds us that love doesn’t end — it just changes form. It lives on in our stories, our prayers, and the meals we share.

As we light candles and remember, may every bite of pancit or kakanin remind us of the people who’ve shaped our hearts. Because in the Filipino home, food isn’t just nourishment — it’s memory. 🌼
