5 Superfood Filipino Herbs You Can Grow at Home (Even with Zero Gardening Skills!)

If there’s one thing I’ve learned bilang isang mom who cooks every day, it’s that fresh herbs can transform a meal—para kang may mini-restaurant sa kusina! But alam mo kung ano pa ang mas masarap?
Yung feeling na “Uy, tinanim ko ‘to!”

I used to think gardening was super intimidating. Parang kailangan mo ng malaking lupa, fancy tools, at green thumb na minana pa sa ninuno. But nope! Over the years, I discovered na marami palang Filipino superfood herbs that grow beautifully even in small containers—kahit nasa balcony ka lang or small space outdoors.

Today I’m sharing my favorite 5 Filipino herbs that are not only easy to grow, but also packed with superfood benefits.

1. Tanglad (Lemongrass)

My go-to for anything comforting—from tinola to tea.
Tanglad grows FAST and forgiving siya kahit makalimutan mong diligan minsan.

Why it’s a superfood:
✔ Anti-inflammatory
✔ Aids digestion
✔ Calming tea for busy moms

Best for: Tinola, marinades, detox water, homemade iced tea

Small story: Twinkle calls it “the mabango grass” dahil every time I cut it, the whole kitchen smells like a spa.

2. Malunggay (Moringa)

The OG of superfoods!
Lumaki akong laging may malunggay sa bakuran — and now I understand why moms love it.

Why it’s a superfood:
✔ High in iron & vitamin C
✔ Boosts energy
✔ Great for breastfeeding moms
✔ Immune-boosting for kids

Best for: Tinola, monggo, smoothies (yes!), and pasta sauces

We have a tiny malunggay tree at home and honestly, it grows like it’s on a mission.

3. Oregano

This herb reminds me of childhood, kasi laging may oregano plant sa bahay ng mga lola.
Perfect pang-natural remedy when the kids have colds.

Why it’s a superfood:
✔ Anti-viral
✔ Anti-inflammatory
✔ Natural antiseptic

Best for: Salabat-style tea with honey, ginisa dishes, aromatics for soups

I swear — kunting dikdik sa mainit na tubig and you have an instant healing tea.

4. Basil (Local Variety)

If you think basil is only for Italian food—nope!
Local basil thrives SO well in Philippine weather.

Why it’s a superfood:
✔ Antioxidants
✔ Good for heart health
✔ Stress-relieving aroma (super true!)

Best for: Pesto, chicken sandwiches, omelettes, and even Lemonade!

Ykaie helps me pick basil leaves whenever we make homemade pesto — it’s our bonding moment.

5. Pandan

The most underrated Filipino herb!
Ang bango-bango niyaaaa. One leaf transforms any rice dish.

Why it’s a superfood:
✔ Anti-anxiety
✔ Helps regulate blood sugar
✔ Natural air freshener (bonus!)

Best for: Rice, gulaman, smoothies, and kakanin

Fun fact: I once tried making pandan iced tea — and now it’s a family favorite!

Growing Filipino herbs doesn’t require big space, big budget, or expert skills.
Just a bit of love, konting araw, and a cup of coffee while you water them.
Trust me: your meals — and your mood — will thank you.
