Sugar Hearts

4.8 from 19 reviews

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 tsp water
  • 12 drops of red food color (depending on how red you want your sugar hearts) I used Americlor in Red Red
  • I used a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to mold the sugar

Instructions

  1. Put sugar in a bowl.
  2. Add water and mix well. The sugar should look like sand when you’re building a sand castle.
  3. If the sugar is too wet, it will be hard to hold up its shape after molding. If the sugar is too dry, it will not harden after it has dried.
  4. Add food color and mix well again.
  5. Trace the heart shape of cookie cutter onto a cardboard.
  6. Cut the heart shape out from cardboard. Cut it a little smaller so that it can go through the cookie cutter.
  7. Scoop some wet sugar into the cutter, press with finger until they get firmed and packed in the cutter.
  8. Place the heart shaped cardboard on the top of the cutter. Slowly lift the cutter up and push the sugar down in a baking pan (you may want to oven-dry it later)
  9. You may air-dry overnight Or you may use a 200 ºF (90 ºC) oven to dry it for 5 minutes.
