A Quick Errand Turned Food Date
One random errand day, Daddydoodledoo and I found ourselves hungry, tired, and in need of a quick refuel. You know those days—wala kang energy mag-isip ng kakainin pero gusto mo pa rin ng something comforting and sulit.
That’s when we decided to finally try Du Hsiao Yueh, a Taiwanese restaurant known for its Minced Pork Rice, which I’ve been hearing about for quite some time. I was curious—masarap ba talaga or hype lang?
Since we’re currently in tipid mode (hello, adulting season 😅), we decided to go for their set meals instead of ordering à la carte. Practical, filling, and controlled ang gastos—very mommy-approved.
What We Ordered: Set Meals for the Win
Set Meal 1 – ₱268
This was my order, and honestly, I was already happy just reading the list:
- Minced Pork Rice
- Crispy Chicken Chop
- Kiamchay
- Tea Egg
- Grilled Taiwanese Sausage
- String Beans with Minced Pork
- Coke
First of all, the chicken chop surprised me. It was crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and well-seasoned — hindi yung tipong bland na umaasa lang sa sawsawan. This alone made the set meal feel worth it.
The Taiwanese sausage was another highlight. Slightly sweet, savory, and smoky — ang sarap kagatin paunti-unti habang sinasabay sa kanin. The tea egg was flavorful, not too salty, and perfect as a quick protein bite.
The string beans with minced pork and kiamchay balanced everything out. May konting freshness at konting alat — pang-cut sa heaviness ng rice and meat.

Set Meal 4 – ₱288
This was daddydoodledoo’s choice:
- Minced Pork Rice
- Roast Pork
- Kiamchay
- Tea Egg
- Grilled Taiwanese Sausage
- String Beans with Minced Pork
- Coke
The roast pork was flavorful with a nice mix of meat and fat—something my husband always appreciates. It had that familiar Chinese-style roast pork taste that pairs so well with plain rice.
Between the two sets, I personally enjoyed mine more because of the crispy chicken chop, but both meals were filling and satisfying for the price.
The Famous Minced Pork Rice: Honest Thoughts
Now let’s talk about what Du Hsiao Yueh is really known for — the Minced Pork Rice.
The flavor was good—savory, slightly sweet, and comforting—but the portion of minced pork was quite minimal, especially compared to what you’d expect when you hear “famous minced pork rice.”
That said, I understand that this might be because we ordered the set meals, which are clearly meant to be more budget-friendly. The rice itself was well-cooked, and the sauce was tasty enough that you’d still enjoy every spoonful.
📝 Mommy thought: Next time, I’d definitely order a regular serving of the minced pork rice on its own to really judge it properly.

Soup Orders: Comfort in a Bowl
We each ordered soup because… soup makes everything better.
- Hot & Sour Soup (₱138) – This was mine. Tangy, comforting, and perfect pang-warm ng tiyan. Hindi overwhelming ang asim, sakto lang.
- Intestine Misua Soup (₱248) – This was daddydoodledoo’s. Very traditional Taiwanese, comforting, and filling. If you like misua with rich flavors, this is a solid choice.
Overall Experience and Budget Verdict
For a casual food date, Du Hsiao Yueh delivered:
✔ Filling meals
✔ Good variety in one set
✔ Budget-friendly prices
✔ Comfort food vibes
Would I say it’s the best minced pork rice I’ve ever had? Not yet—but I’m reserving judgment until we try the regular portion next time.
What I did appreciate was that even while tightening our belts, we still got to enjoy a satisfying meal without feeling guilty about the bill. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need—good food, good company, and no stress.
Food dates don’t always have to be fancy or expensive. Sometimes, it’s about discovering new places, sharing set meals, and laughing about how “next time, normal serving na tayo.” 😄
Du Hsiao Yueh is definitely worth a visit — especially if you’re curious about Taiwanese flavors but still want to stay on budget.
