But here’s the secret I discovered one lazy Sunday: your rice cooker can do way more than cook rice. One afternoon, I was too tired to cook a full meal, so I tossed some chicken, soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic into my rice cooker just to experiment. A few minutes later — boom! — perfect chicken adobo, no stovetop needed.

Since then, I’ve been hooked. My rice cooker has become my best friend for quick, hearty, and even “wow, you made that in a rice cooker?!” kind of meals.

1. Rice Cooker Adobo

Let’s start strong — the classic Filipino favorite! Just add chicken or pork, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, and peppercorns. Press “Cook,” and let the rice cooker do the work. You’ll know it’s done when your kitchen smells like home.
Tip: Add hard-boiled eggs near the end for that traditional touch.

2. Rice Cooker Pasta with Garlic Shrimp

Yes, pasta! Boil the noodles right in your rice cooker, drain, and toss in olive oil, butter, garlic, and shrimp. Add a pinch of chili flakes if you like a little heat. Perfect for busy weeknights or when you’re craving restaurant-style pasta but not the cleanup.

3. Rice Cooker Pancit Canton

This one’s a quick lifesaver for merienda. Combine pancit noodles, sliced veggies, and soy-oyster sauce mixture. Stir occasionally and let everything soak up the flavor. Serve it hot with calamansi on the side.

4. Rice Cooker Chicken with Mushroom and Chinese Sausage

This is one of my absolute favorites — it tastes like something you’d order in a Chinese restaurant, but you made it in your rice cooker!

Here’s how I do it:

  • Slice some chicken thighs and season with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and a little sugar.
  • Add sliced mushrooms and thinly chopped Chinese sausage (lap cheong).
  • Pour everything over uncooked rice and water, give it a gentle stir, then press “Cook.”
    As it steams, your kitchen fills with this rich, savory aroma that makes everyone ask, “What’s cooking?” The result? Soft, flavorful rice infused with chicken juices, umami mushrooms, and that distinct sweetness from the sausage.

Bonus Tip: Garnish with spring onions or a fried egg on top for extra comfort.

5. Rice Cooker Steamed Fish with Ginger

When you’re craving something light but satisfying, this is your go-to. Place seasoned fish on a small tray or foil inside your rice cooker above boiling water. Add ginger and soy sauce, then steam for 10–12 minutes. The result is perfectly tender fish that pairs beautifully with garlic rice.

Yes, you can even bake! Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, egg, milk, and butter in a mug. Place it inside the rice cooker and “cook” for about 10–12 minutes. It comes out soft, moist, and chocolatey — the perfect sweet ending to a lazy day.

It’s funny how something as simple as a rice cooker can teach you creativity in the kitchen. Some of my favorite meals were born out of those “I’m too tired to cook” moments. The rice cooker reminds us that food doesn’t have to be complicated to be delicious — sometimes, it just needs heart, a dash of resourcefulness, and one magic button.
